We are dedicated to creating resilient, healthy, and permanent woodlands across the German landscape.

Q: Why do you only plant trees in Germany?

We focus exclusively on Germany for a simple, powerful reason: because this is our home. We see the effects of climate change—the stressed pines, the drought-stricken beeches, the forests weakened by pests—on our local landscapes every day. We firmly believe that the most meaningful and accountable change begins in the communities where we live.

Q: What kind of trees do you plant and why is this important?

Our core principle is to create healthy, climate-resilient mixed forests (klimastabile Mischwälder), not tree plantations. To achieve this, we plant a diverse mix of native and site-appropriate tree species (standortgerechte Baumarten).   

This approach is critical for long-term ecological success. The vast monoculture forests of the past, often consisting of only a single species like spruce or pine, are proving highly vulnerable to the stresses of climate change, including pest infestations, drought, and storms. A healthy forest thrives on diversity. By planting a rich mix of species such as oak, beech, maple, linden, and fir, we are recreating a natural, stable ecosystem. This biodiversity provides a resilient habitat for a wide array of wildlife—from insects and birds to larger mammals—and is fundamentally stronger in the face of environmental challenges.   

The exact species composition for each project is never a one-size-fits-all decision. It is determined through a rigorous process of site analysis and in close consultation with local foresters and conservation partners. This expert-led approach ensures that the trees we plant are perfectly suited to the specific soil, light, and climate conditions of the location, giving them the best possible foundation for a long and healthy life.   

 

Q: You plant small trees, not seeds. What is the advantage of this?

This is a cornerstone of our commitment to quality and impact. We plant young trees, known as saplings, that are typically one to three years old and stand between 40 and 120 cm tall. We do not use direct seeding.   

The advantage is significant and directly impacts the success of your contribution. A sapling has already overcome the most vulnerable stage of its life in a protected nursery environment. This gives it a crucial head start when planted in the forest, making it far more robust and resilient against challenges like harsh weather, competition from other plants, and browsing by wildlife.

While direct seeding can be a viable technique in certain, very specific conditions, planting established saplings dramatically increases the survival rate of the trees. Our choice to invest in high-quality saplings is a conscious decision to prioritize the long-term success of the forests we create. It ensures that your contribution has the most immediate, reliable, and lasting impact possible on the German landscape.

Q: As a non-profit, how exactly are my donations used?

We are committed to radical transparency and ensuring that every donation is a direct and efficient investment in Germany's forests. Your contribution is carefully allocated across the essential stages of a successful and sustainable reforestation project. Here is a clear breakdown of how your funds are used:   

• The Tree Itself: A significant portion of your donation covers the cost of sourcing high-quality, healthy, and native saplings from certified local German nurseries. This ensures we plant robust trees that are genetically adapted to their new environment.

• The Professional Planting: Your contribution funds the entire planting process. This includes site preparation (which can involve clearing invasive species), the logistics of transporting the saplings, and the professional labor of our own dedicated team who plant each tree by hand, ensuring it is done correctly.

• The Critical First Years of Care: Our commitment does not end when the tree is in the ground. A crucial part of your donation is allocated to the monitoring and maintenance of the project area for the first three to five years. This period is vital for a young tree's survival and may include measures like protection against wildlife and ensuring the saplings are not outcompeted by other vegetation.   

• Project Management and Administration: A small percentage of every donation covers our essential operational costs. This includes project planning with forestry partners, monitoring, reporting, and communication with our supporters as well as things like website hosting. We are legally structured as a non-profit and are dedicated to keeping these administrative costs as low as possible to maximize the on-the-ground impact of your donation.

 

Q: Are my donations tax-deductible in Germany?

Yes, absolutely. Wurzelhelden (GrowOurPlanet is the name used outside of Germany) is officially recognized as a non-profit organization (gemeinnütziger Verein) by the German tax authorities. Therefore, your donations are fully tax-deductible within Germany.

The process is straightforward and complies with German tax law :   

• For donations up to €300: Your bank transfer receipt or account statement serves as sufficient proof for the tax office (Finanzamt). This is known as the vereinfachter Spendennachweis.

• For donations of €300 or more: We will automatically issue and send you a formal donation receipt (Spendenbescheinigung) by post or email at the beginning of the following calendar year, which you can then submit with your tax return.

 

Q: How can I be sure my tree has been planted? What proof do I receive?

We understand that providing tangible proof of our work is essential for building and maintaining your trust. A single certificate is not enough. We offer a multi-layered approach to verification and transparency:

1. Personalized Digital Certificate: Immediately upon making your contribution, you will receive a personalized digital certificate via email. This certificate will feature your name (or the name of a gift recipient), the number of trees you have helped plant, and details about the specific project region your donation is supporting.   

2. Regular Project Updates: Our communication with you continues long after the initial donation. Through our website's blog and our email newsletter, we provide regular updates from our planting areas. These updates include photos, videos, and stories from the field, allowing you to follow the progress of the forest you are helping to grow.

3. Public Project Map: We believe in showing, not just telling. Our website features a map of Germany where we clearly mark the locations of our current and completed planting projects. This transparency allows you to see exactly where we are active.

4. Commitment to Future Verification: We are continuously exploring new ways to enhance our transparency. We are actively investigating the use of technologies like GPS-verified photos for each project and drone-based monitoring to track forest growth over time, aligning with the highest international standards of accountability.   

 

Q: What happens to the trees in the long run? Are they protected from being cut down?

Our fundamental goal is to create the "primeval forests of tomorrow" (Urwälder von morgen)—permanent, self-sustaining ecosystems that will stand for generations. The trees you help us plant are intended to grow to their full natural lifespan.   

To ensure this, we address the critical issue of land security head-on. We only initiate projects on land where we can secure long-term protection. This is achieved through legally binding agreements with our partners—be they municipalities, private landowners, or state forestry departments. These contracts explicitly protect the reforested areas from clear-cutting and commercial logging for a minimum period of 99 years, a standard set by leading conservation initiatives in Germany.   

It is important to understand the distinction between commercial logging and sustainable forest management. Over the course of many decades, a healthy forest may require selective thinning of certain trees to allow others more light and space to grow, enhancing the overall health and stability of the ecosystem. Such scientifically-guided interventions may occur, but they are always in service of our primary goal: ensuring the area remains a permanent, biodiverse forest, not a commercial timber plantation. Your contribution is an investment in a lasting natural legacy.

Our approach is specifically designed to overcome these challenges and ensure the long-term success of the forests we plant.   

Our strategy for ensuring high survival rates is built on four key pillars:

1. Quality Saplings, Not Seeds: We begin with a significant advantage. By planting healthy, 1-3 year old saplings, we use trees that have already passed their most fragile stage. They are far more resilient to environmental stressors than seeds or tiny, first-year seedlings.   

2. Expert Site and Species Selection: We adhere strictly to the ecological principle of "the right tree in the right place". We do not plant on inappropriate land like native grasslands or peat bogs. Every location is carefully vetted in partnership with local forestry professionals to ensure it is suitable for reforestation and that the native species we select will thrive there.   

3. Professional, Hands-On Planting: Because we plant the trees ourselves, we control the quality of the work. Our dedicated team is trained in best-practice planting techniques that minimize root shock and give each sapling the best possible start. • Official Non-Profit Status: We are a registered and regulated non-profit organization in Germany. This legal structure binds us to our mission and requires financial transparency. We are not a for-profit company using tree planting as a marketing tactic.

• A Direct Action Model: We are not a middleman. Many online campaigns simply collect money and pass it to other organizations, creating a long and opaque chain where impact can be lost. We are the ones in the forest. Our own team manages the projects and plants the trees. This ensures your donation is used efficiently and directly on the ground.
